Using Comics to Support Teen Mental Health

Recent upheavals in daily life are causing more teens to struggle with mental health issues. Comic creators Cara Bean, Rachel Lindsay, Lawrence Lindell, Whit Taylor & social worker Diana Wheatley discuss using comics to explore mental health topics & how to find and use comics to help teens.

April 2021

  • What's Old is New Again: Graphic Novel Adaptations of Classic Novels - This session will focus on some of the best graphic novel adaptations of classic novels, how libraries can market them to students and teachers, how schools are currently using them, and a look at how classics are adapted into graphic novels.
  • Podcasting Graphic Novels - This session will focus on highlighting how podcasting can be a great vehicle for promoting a genre, especially graphic novels.

May 2021

  • Story Strong: Mind. Soul. Comics. - This session will focus on describing ways in which responsive librarianship using graphic novels can promote mental health literacy for adolescent readers and will discuss how to understand how graphic novels programming can be adapted to a virtual format to reach teen participants.
  • Circulating Comics, Cultivating Community: Adult Programming Through Comics in the Public Library - This panel takes up Spiegelman’s declaration that comics are one of the last bastions of literacy, expanding upon his thought to consider many forms of literacy including that of information literacy and emotional literacy and more.
  • Making the Most of Reading Lists - Graphic novels are showing up more and more on state and award lists, and often even being highlighted through graphic novel specific lists. Members of the Texas Maverick Graphic Novel Reading list will discuss how to incorporate the reading lists into your classroom, school library, or public library reading programming. They will share ideas on how to get the books into students' hands, how to advertise them, and various clubs and activities that can be done with the books on the list.A member of the GNCRT Libcomix team will highlight state and award lists that can be used no matter your state or library. June 2021

  • Noir is the New Black - NOIR IS THE NEW BLACK is a graphic novel anthology featuring 16 Noir stories from 40 Black creators from all around the world. This session will discuss the process of creating an independent graphic novel anthology from scratch and will highlight the importance of Black Noir as a genre in American literature and sequential arts. The panel will feature the editors of the anthology and select creators.

January 2021

  • 'Sacrifice of Darkness' Creators Panel - Join moderator Crystal Chen and creators Roxane Gay, Tracy Lynne Oliver, and Rebecca Kirby for a conversation about their recent graphic novel adaptation of Gay's New York Times bestselling short story, "The Sacrifice of Darkness." The graphic novel expands on the original short story about a world where the sun no longer shines. Thanks to Boom Studios for collaborating to make this panel possible.
