Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT)

Promoting discussion on library intellectual freedom, facilitating communication, encouraging ALA member involvement, and fostering responsibility in policy implementation.
Intellectual Freedom Round Table

A commitment to intellectual freedom transforms your library. ...

ALA actively advocates and educates in defense of intellectual freedom—the rights of library users to read, seek information, and speak freely as guaranteed by the First Amendment. Intellectual freedom is a core value of the library profession, and a basic right in our democratic society. A publicly supported library provides free, equitable, and confidential access to information for all people of its community.

Our Mission & Scope

The Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) provides a forum for the discussion of activities, programs, and problems in intellectual freedom of libraries and librarians; serves as a channel of communications on intellectual freedom matters; promotes a greater opportunity for involvement among the members of the ALA in defense of intellectual freedom; promotes a greater feeling of responsibility in the implementation of ALA policies on intellectual freedom. 2019-2022 Strategic Plan
