Give ALA
As the unprecedented wave of censorship attempts continues to threaten libraries in 2023, we are deeply grateful for the commitment of ALA members, library workers everywhere, and all our supporters who are working to deliver on one of the key tenets of ALA's core mission, ensuring access to information for all.
This Giving Tuesday, we ask you to support libraries and the right to read for the next generation.
Between January 1 and August 31, 2023, OIF reported 695 attempts to censor library materials and services and documented challenges to 1,915 unique titles — a 20% increase from the same reporting period in 2022, which saw the highest number of book challenges since ALA began compiling the data more than 20 years ago.
As a result of this coordinated national book-banning campaign, library professionals across the country are experiencing harassment, loss of employment, and in some places, the prospect of facing criminal charges just for doing their jobs — providing materials that serve the information needs of everyone in their communities.
They are fighting back, but they can't do it alone.
The ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom is hard at work advocating, educating, and providing confidential professional support to library professionals and community members facing censorship challenges during this critically important time. Responding to more than 500 requests for assistance so far this year, an average of more than 10 incidents per week, the demand for their services has never been higher.
We are seeing progress, but the challenges we face will likely increase as the U.S. presidential election nears. We need your help to expand and extend our ability to fight the ever-growing threats to libraries and the right to read and think freely.
ALA is one of the nation’s leading advocates for intellectual freedom and actively educates decision-makers about the rights of library users to read, seek information, and speak freely as guaranteed by the First Amendment.
Now, more than ever, your support matters.
